Career Opportunities for Biotechnologists………

by "The Librarian" on November 25, 2009

Biotechnologists are often in great demand in the sub disciplines of biotechnology. These disciplines include red biotechnology, the application of biotechnology techniques to medicine, green biotechnology, the application of these techniques to agriculture, white biotechnology, which applies biotechnology specifically to industrial processes and blue biotechnology, which brings biotechnology to the marine world.

In recent times, biotechnology as a subject has grown rapidly. And as far as employment is concerned, it has become the second fastest growing sector after multi-media.

Biotechnologists, the extreme pure product of the biotechnology can operate their minds in several directions of career. They are manipulators of plant, animal and microbial kingdom. They do this for the betterment of mankind. Where to find biotechnologist? Go to research laboratory, you will get biotechnologist. Go to educational institutions, you will find him. Go to industries, again he will be there, busy in work. Go to the agricultural world, you will find him again. The nature of work of biotechnologists, being interdisciplinary, requires working together with people from different fields such as biology, chemistry, biochemistry, microbiology, molecular biology, immunology, genetics, engineering, food science and agriculture etc. Several sectors are opened for them.

More specifically several sectors opened for biotechnologists includes discovery research, preclinical research, pharmaceuticals product development, clinical development, project management, regulatory affairs, medical affairs etc. Commercial sector includes business development, corporate communication, product support and sales. Biotechnologists have opportunities in Biotech and Bio IT parks.

Most of the biotechnologists are employed in leading Businesses and pharmaceutical companies, chemical industries, bioprocessing industries, agriculture related industries and pollution control activities of the major industries etc. They can even join government and corporate-run research and development organizations. Biotechnology’s application in Medicine has helped in the development of various medicines, vaccines and diagnostics. The remarkable development work carried out by biotechnologists in this field has led to improvement in the  methods of diagnosis,  medicines and vaccinations for diseases which once thought were incurable are no more a cause of worry, which has been a blessing for humankind. R&D spending in biotechnology industry is on the rise, resulting in robust technology platforms, safe and effective medications, and improved drug sales.

Biotechnologists also find opportunities at places involving activities like chemical processes, genetic engineering, textile development, cosmetic development etc. In agriculture, the developments of transgenic varieties of the economic crops are possible by the efforts of biotechnologists. Biotechnologists are also encouraging a shift from chemical based fertilizers and pesticides to biofertilizers and biopesticides to retain the quality of soil, food and the environment. Biotechnologists in the area of animal husbandry have improved animal breeding. Several kinds of genetically engineered, high yielding animal breeds have come up which has increased the output of dairy products as well as the meat products. Biotechnologists find jobs in environmental sector for checking industrial air pollution levels, treatment of industrial waste, designing microbes for checking oil pollution etc.

Private sector companies generally offer Rs12000 to 20000 per month to an entry level postgraduate. The leading companies offer Rs 50000 to 60000 to expert biotechnologists in R&D. Those employed as researchers in government sector can have a starting salary of around Rs 10000 to 12000 per month along with various government allowances.

Biotechnologists can find career in teaching profession as Lecturer, Reader and Professor for leading post graduate courses like M.Sc. Biotechnology, M.Sc. (Agriculture) Biotechnology, M.V.Sc. (Animal) Biotechnology, and M.Tech. Biotechnology, M.Sc./M.V.Sc. in Veterinary Biotechnology, M.Sc. (Marine) Biotechnology, Medical Biotechnology, M.Tech. in Biomedical engineering/Biotechnology etc. Depending upon the necessity, more advanced courses such as Ph.D. and Post-Doctoral research in Biotechnology can also be pursued in national and international universities.

A well expert biotechnologist can develop its own business. He can establish commercial tissue culture laboratory, biofertilizer company or mushroom industries etc. Some of the biotech companies and research institutes of India where a biotechnologist can find their jobs are: Mahyco, Bejo Sheetal, Krishidhan Seeds, Jalna.
